Before answering calls for help, all invited applicants participate in an extensive training program, with no exceptions. At the Distress Centre, we are grateful for the commitment of new & experienced volunteers, so we must give back exactly what is given to the Distress Centre - time!
The 1-year commitment is stipulated due to the extensive investment we place into training, workshops and ongoing educational opportunities which we provide free of charge to our volunteers. Volunteers are the heart of the DCOR's services and we want to ensure everyone is given the necessary tools, skills and knowledge to feel confident upon answering calls.
We recognize that people are incredibly busy and fulfill many different roles in their daily lives. For this reason, all shifts are scheduled for volunteers according to their commitments. We work with volunteers to plan shifts at times that meet the demands of volunteers' own schedules!
*Please note, the Distress Centre's policy states that we cannot provide references (for graduate studies, employment in social services, etc) until volunteers have completed their one-year, 200 hours commitment. After that time, we will be happy to provide reference letters as required.
