Volunteer Crisis Responders

DCOR, like most crisis lines in Canada, relies on the services provided by Volunteer Crisis Responders

Representing the diversity of our community, DCOR Responders are highly trained in active listening, non judgmental services. Our responders focus on supporting the caller through varying levels of support, stress, distress, and crisis and providing referral and resources as needed.

Each responder completes over 60 hours of comprehensive training, including The Distress Centres Standard Responder Training and Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST), equiping each responder with foundational skills to best support our caller community.

Our Crisis Line Responders are the heart of our organization, their dedication and commitment to their community is what allows our service to provide support 24/7.

We recognize the critical role of all responders and are committed to ensuring they are fully supported. This includes access to ongoing training opportunities and 24/7 escalation support from our Leaders and Escalation Specialists, who are available around the clock to offer guidance, assist with support delivery, participate in debriefing, and help make necessary decisions when intervention is required.

Our Crisis Responders report a high level of satisfaction with the work they do, not only because they recognize the positive impact that results from the support they provide, but also the personal benefits they achieve. Responders report, increased confidence from the standard responder training, as well as enhanced skills in active listening, crisis management, conflict resolution, and community knowledge.
