Paramedical Service

Approved and supported by the Ontario Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care`s Emergency Health Services Branch, since January 10th, 2017, the Ottawa Paramedic Service and the Distress Centre have partnered to offer a new service to patients in crisis.  This new service allows Paramedic Communications Officers to contact Distress Centre Responders to provide emotional support and stabilization for patients suffering from suicidal thoughts or exhibiting suicidal behaviour, patients with serious mental illness, and patients dealing with psychotic episodes who are waiting for the Paramedics to arrive on scene.

Through the “Emergency Support Line”, Crisis Line Responders offer crisis defusion, psychological stabilization, emotional support, problem solving, social maintenance, information and referrals to pertinent community resources which may be helpful to the patient following their discharge from the hospital (including the Mental Health Crisis Line) to patients.
